 16th Sunday Ordinary time
Introduction to the Liturgy
Resurrection Medical Center

One of the hallmarks of Christianity is hospitality. On this, the 16 Sunday in Ordinary time, there is strong message of hospitality. It is from the Genesis account of Abraham’s hospitality .One of the first things we think of in terms of hospitality is inviting our guest to share a meal. In choosing the menu, a good steak is very high on the list. When served with warm rolls, it is a feast fit for the most esteemed guest. This is just the kind of meal that Abraham prepared for his guests.

In his letter to the Colossians, St. Paul describes his hospitality In terms of his ministry. The Gospel gives us the account of the hospitality of Martha and Mary offered to Jesus, himself.  and his comment on different dimensions of hospitality.

The Scripture Scholar, Dianne Bergant finds these messages in the liturgy today: “First, we are called to be hospitable to others, not only with our homes or goods, but with our very persons. Second this openness should spring from our commitment to Jesus. When we are committed to him, it will make little difference if we suffer like Paul, or serve like Martha, or sit in rapt attention like Mary. we will be doing God’s will.”

In this liturgy, w don’t want to lose sight of the fact that we are here to share a meal. The Eucharist was first celebrated within the context of a meal during which Jesus gave his own body and blood to eat. This is the ultimate hospitality that he continues at our altar this morning.

As we leave here today and have occasion either to give or to accept hospitality, Let us, in our lives, symbolize by our actions how we appreciate and witness to the Life of Christ in us.
