Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you Matthew 5-:44
One evening of September 11, 2001, my parish celebrated a Mass announced only on the radio, yet attended by a crowd that overflowed the church. It was a frightening time. My pastor chose this Gospel to read at that Mass (Matthew 5:43-48). There were gasps when he began to read. There were letters criticizing him and yet, this is Jesus' message for these very times. We imagine there are exceptions; the enemies of our nation; a business partner who cheated us; an estranged sibling who no longer speaks to us; a former spouse who betrayed us. Jesus doesn't mention these exceptions. How can we call ourselves disciples and not heed this very direct teaching.
Family prayer
Lord Jesus, bless those who are now our personal enemies or the enemies of our nation. Make us instruments of your peace at home and throughout the world. Amen.
Reflection
When we hold a grudge against someone,
we are giving that person control of us.
It is we who need to let go of the grudge and free ourselves.
Never mind that the person my deserve your anger.
Just let it go and ask God that this incident may be a source of learning for both of you. crsr
