Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Introduction to the Liturgy
Resurrection Medical Center
In the first reading the prophet Isaiah talks about the physical reconstruction of the city of Jerusalem as well as the need for spiritual renewal. He goes on to say that Israel will soon be referred to as “a glorious crown in the hand of the Lord.”
In the second reading Paul writes, “To each individual,” the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. The purpose of this manifestation is to bring about an awareness of and an openness to God’s activity.
In the Gospel reading, John brings us to the wedding feast of Cana. Here, Christ performed the first miracle by changing water into wine. With one word from the Mother of God, Jesus reveals His divinity so that, just as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, all people can realize just how much our God rejoices in each of us.
The wine jugs in front of the Altar remind us that the miracle of “good wine” continues even today through the outpouring of the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit in each individual
This week the Church also celebrates Christian Unity. During this Liturgy we are reminded to pray for continuous unity among the Churches.
